According to the USDA, the lack of extreme heat in 2017 helped boost the nation's corn yield to its highest level on record. U.S. corn growers produced 14.6 billion bushels at a record high 176.6 bushels per acre. Soybean production for 2017 hit a record 4.39 billion bushels up 2% from 2016.
Many grain handlers and storage facilities are gearing up for a higher demand for storage space. Now is the time to make plans to ready those facilities for what could be a "bin buster." Sanitation efforts are already under way at many locations to clear empty bins of grain dust and fines from walls, cracks and crevices, door seams, vents, and under floors. Left behind, grain dust and fines can harbor small populations of grain infesting insects that can bloom into big problems if the debris is not removed. It is equally important to keep areas around and outside of bins clear of weeds and grass to further avoid insect infestations as well as rodent populations.

Tips to reduce the threat of a pest infestation:
- Minimize potential pest problems by cleaning up in and around grain bins during the summer.
- Before new grain goes into storage, these bins need to be swept, or preferably vacuumed out and debris either buried or burned.
- Clean up and remove any spilled grain around the bin. This grain could sustain insect populations that could migrate to the bin.
- Control vegetation around the bins. Grasses and weeds can harbor insect pests.
Perma-Guard Grain and Seed Storage Insecticide D-10

Perma-Guard is the proud manufacturer of a safe organic grain and seed storage insecticide. Perma-Guard Grain and Seed Storage Insecticide D-10 is OMRI listed and can be used for Certified Organic Grain and Seed Storage to protect from insecticide damage. This product is pure diatomaceous earth from a fresh water source. Diatomaceous Earth in this form works mechanically not chemically to kill insects.
Pyronyl Crop Spray
A 6% natural pyrethrin labeled for a number of stored grain applications. Pyronyl Crop Spray controls over 15 grain infesting insects when used as a direct seed and grain treatment. It can be applied to the grain as it enters the storage facility. Pyronyl Crop Spray can also be used as an empty bin spray. Additionally, this versatile product can be used as a "top dressing" for control of grain infesting moths.
Labeled for use on barley, beans, bird-seed, buckwheat, cocoa beans, corn, cotton seed, flax, oats, rice, sorghum, and wheat.
Tempo Ultra SC and Tempo Ultra WP
Both are well known products for the treatment of empty storage bins. The SC formulation is a liquid Suspension Concentrate. The WP formulation is a Wettable Powder. Both formulations are labeled for over 15 grain infesting insects.
Fumitoxin
Fumitoxin contains 55% aluminum phosphide. Depending on the temperature and humidity, Fumitoxin tablets and pellets release phosphine gas slowly. The phosphine gas readily penetrates densely packed areas controlling all developmental stages of stored product pests.
A fumigant license is required for purchase.
